An Anishinaabe Nation guided by respect, resilience and harmony, and by the wisdom of our Elders and our cultural teachings
Gakijiwanong: In 2023, Lac La Croix First Nation changed its name to Gakijiwanong Anishinaabe Nation. Gakijiwanong is Ojibwe for 'Where the water flows.' The Nation is a signatory to Treaty 3, signed in 1873.
Population: According to Indigenous Services Canada, our community is home to 315 people living on reserve.
Location: We are in the Rainy River District of northwestern Ontario, along the Ontario-Minnesota border and the shores of Lac La Croix. Our reserve is Neguagon Lake Indian Reserve 25D, approximately 200 km northwest of Thunder Bay.
Culture: We hold a close connection to the land and water, and Ojibwe (Saulteaux) is our language. Guiding visitors is traditional work in our territory, and our lands were home to the last free-roaming herd of the Lac La Croix Indian Pony. Following our 2023 land claim settlement, members named youth and housing as top priorities, including a youth centre, a Pow Wow arbour and new housing.
